This is the place where most builders are very opinionated and tell you what the amplifier has to be built of, and are usually very one-sided. I won't do that.
After being a musician for over 30 years and a technician for over 20 years, I have found that almost everything affects sound and feel. From circuit board material to the type of resistors, to capacitors and especially transformers. Having appreciated a wide variety of music and played jazz-rock fusion, I have considered it a challenge to capture the tone and feel of many styles and types of music.
WHAT'S INSIDE A MORRIS AMPLIFIER?
I use power transformers from Mercury Magnetics to Hammonds. Most output transformers are Mercury Magnetics - some are custom designed for me exclusively.
All amps are point to point wired - not just for how it affects tone, but also for the difference in response and definately for reliability and ease of repair.
Different components are used in different sections depending on what I want for the end result. For instance, in my 30 Watt 4-6BQ5/EL84 Class A type amplifier head that has two channels, on the clean channel will be all 1 watt NOS Allen Bradley carbon composition resistors, and on the distortion channel are some carbon film resistors and some polypropelene capacitors (instead of polyester) to keep the noise down and tighten it up in some areas. Of course, an old Tweed style clone would be all Allen Bradley NOS carbon composition resistors or Ohmite with a paper laminate circuit board, and solid core wire. It all makes a difference.
My cabs are custom made for me by MOJO TONE. Some cabs I order are bare wood and I tolex them myself.
Both Combos and Ext. speaker cabs are made from quality pine or baltic-birch - again, depending on what I'm trying to achieve.
In conclusion - the complete amplifier is a sum of its whole - and different combinations are used for different applications.
CREDENTIALS
Graduated from George Brown College in 1986 with the Electronic/Audio Equipment Course.
APPROVALS
The last thing I would mention is that all my amplifiers and pedals are ESA or CSA certified. Every product is inspected, and tested. ALL components are CSA certified. CSA is very stringent about quality of components, and I only use approved parts. This makes for a very good and safe product. No cutting corners.
