Morris Muscle 30

  • Dual Channel Only
  • 1 - GZ34, - 5 - 12AX7's and 4 - 6BQ5's
  • 30 watts

Call it Class A or call it class A/B - I won't get into the debate - 'cause this amp just SINGS. I de-gained the clean channel from the normal style of this type amp. With a stock single coil it can stay clean past 3/4 on the clean channel's volume control. Really quite loud and articulate. I did this because with my overdrive channels there really is no need to crank full out for distortion. This overdrive channel can go from sounding like the clean channel cranked to incredible crunch (like a Hi-Watt on steroids) and sustain - without thinning out. You don't need a pedal on this one - unless you want it on the clean channel. You can give it single coils, or humbuckers, it doesn't care, but will track each one accordingly.

  • Cab dimensions:

An extremely famous producer uses this amp. Obviously by his comments this single channel amp can pull off anything you like in a studio environment. Live it can compete with the old cranked up sound with the same sensitivity to your guitar volume control as a Non-Master volume amp only at 'any' output volume. It has my two Crunch and Drive controls that are tailored for different responses that have given my amps a name also, therefore giving this amp enough gain if you desire to get 'over the top'. It has a grind all of its own - mixing classic/vintage with modern. And with the right 6L6's in place, it can get a real crossover to British sound. The floating baffle dips out a bit of the mids that are usually too harsh and overbearing in Vintage 30's. The pine cab contributes to the vintage flavor mixed in. This amp really resonates!!

Mini Muscle 14

  • 14 watts
  • Volume, Treble, Bass.
  • 1 - 12" Mojo Tone BV30H speaker
  • 1 - solid state plug in / Weber Copper Cap WZ34 plug in
  • 2 - 6V6 tubes, 2- 12AX7 tubes
  • Cab Material - pine - and thin floating birch ply baffle
  • Cab dimensions; 16" (H) X 20" (W) X 9.5" (D)
  • No Negative feedback

This amp is designed with an octal socket in the power section and a solid state diode rectifier plug installed to produce a full 14 watts RMS. It is cathode biased, and is a much more versatile amp than you might think. There is a couple switches added to the top panel for Attitude and Brilliance allowing it to go from Country clean & tight, to Blues, to crunchy Rock by playing with them. It also comes with a boost switch pedal that works no matter what position the other switches are in - to get a bit more sustain and volume for leads when playing live, or just more Rock and Roll in a studio situation. I have tailored it to not have the "fizzies", when cranked full-out, that a lot of amps built like this seem to have.

Besides the footswitch it comes with a Weber VST Copper Cap rectifier substitute plug in to create more sag if you desire. This drops the output power to 12 watts - giving it a great tweed feel and vibe. The Copper Cap does a good job in this particular case because the screens use a dropping resistor instead of a choke. For further reduction in power you can use a Weber WY3GT copper cap to get 9 watts for great sagging, crunched out studio recordings. The power transformer does not have a 5 VAC tap on it - so a real rectifier tube cannot be used. This amp also takes pedals really well.

Options & Price

The Combo is tailored to the Mojo BV30H speaker, but other types are available - such as Eminence or Celestion - for an upcharge.

This is the 'Big Brother' to the previous Mini. It is housed in a Tweed Super size cabinet - giving slightly more depth. It is a special amp designed for those players that say they HAVE to have output stage distortion. So I gave that - and at 'any' volume level required!!

The DISTORTION channel is a built in 2 watt amplifier that has two gain settings (switchable on the top) to satisfy these certain players. You basically overdrive this small single ended CLASS 'A' amplifier and it's output transformer into a dummy load and then a built in attenuator (Master) controls the level sent to the higher 20 watt output stage. So - no matter what level you are playing at it is ALWAYS output stage distortion. You have control over how much you want to overdrive the output stage, but how loud you want the output volume to be - 'without' affecting the CLEAN channel. If you use an attenuator alone - it affects all channels.

Another unique design is - when in the DISTORTION channel there is negative feedback applied with the Edge control being a type of presence with that - but on the CLEAN channel there is NO negative feedback applied to the amp - this giving a sparkly top end and bounce to that channel.

The full 20 watts and fixed biasing gives it a tighter sound than the Mini Muscle 14 and keeps the output stage more precise for the 2 watt amp to drive. There is a LOT of versatility with this amplifier for sure.

'55 Tweed

  • 4 - 10" speakers
  • 1 - 5U4GB tube, 2 - 6L6 tubes, 3 - 12AX7 tubes.
  • Cab material - pine - and thin floating ply baffle.
  • Cab dimensions; - 23.5" (H) X 22 5/8" (W) X 10.5" (D)

This is a clone of my '55 Bassman combo amp, made with new components. It is not a copy of a schematic of what was supposed to be made back then. I used values of components until I achieved the sound and feel to be as close as possible to my original 50-year-plus-old amp. My original Bassman is still completely stock everything - caps - resistors - transformers - speakers - cab - ALL!! Everyone that has ever heard it fell in love and asked why I didn't make a copy. So - here it is - you definitely won't be disappointed.

The '55 was not like the '59 and only had treble and bass controls and a choke input filter design. The '55 to '57 Jensen's had a different cone too, than the '59 P10R's - and had a much prettier midrange in my opinion. I use Weber 10" earlier P10R's and then I voiced the amp to work right with them. All newer speakers - even after being broken in (which I do here before the amp goes out) - seem to have a problem with getting the right grind when cranked. The tone is right clean - but they have more fizz when cranked. It was a challenge to say the least, getting this amp right. But if you love old tweed sounds - this has it. Of course - the Transformers are designed and made by Mercury Magnetics.
